Consumer Protection in California

California has the most robust consumer protection legal framework in the United States. The state's Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA), Unfair Competition Law (UCL), and California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) provide California consumers with rights and remedies that exceed federal protections in many areas.

California's large and diverse economy — including the nation's largest auto market, a massive financial services sector, and a dominant technology industry — creates significant consumer protection issues. California consumers are among the most targeted by robocallers, debt collectors, and deceptive businesses.

National Consumer Advocates' California practice is led by Jerome La Torre, who is admitted to the California State Bar. Our California attorneys handle TCPA, FDCPA, FCRA, auto dealer fraud, data privacy, and consumer fraud cases throughout the state, with particular experience in the Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco Bay Area markets.

California Consumer Protection Law: California Consumer Legal Remedies Act (CLRA) & Unfair Competition Law (UCL)

California has the most comprehensive consumer protection framework in the country. The CLRA (Civil Code §§ 1750-1784) prohibits 27 specific unfair methods of competition and unfair or deceptive acts in consumer transactions, providing actual damages, punitive damages, injunctive relief, and attorney fees. The UCL (Bus. & Prof. Code § 17200) prohibits any unlawful, unfair, or fraudulent business act or practice — one of the broadest consumer protection statutes in the nation. California's CCPA/CPRA also provides the strongest data privacy protections in the United States.
